Exports
Historically, the United States has been the largest supplier of scrap into the world market. Ferrous scrap exports ranged from 10 to 12 million tons for many years but, with growing domestic needs and weaker demand from offshore, declined to 6 – 8 million tons in recent years. In 2003, off-shore demand for U.S. scrap returned to historical levels reaching nearly 12 million tons in 2003, highest since 1990 and up 20% from 2002 levels.
